Getting Healthy in the New Year - How to Get Started
Happy New Year! Are you ready? Ready or not, here it comes!
I love starting a new year. It gives me a chance to “shake off the old” and embrace the new that awaits in the months ahead. Many people like to make resolutions around the first of the year. That may or may not be your thing but regardless, the start of a new year is a great time to pause and take stock of your life by asking yourself questions. What do you really love in your life right now? How can you keep that going in the new year? What are you NOT happy about in your life? How can you change it or improve on it? Do you need to let something go? Are you holding on to old habits and patterns that are no longer helpful or useful? Are you in relationships that are not mutually beneficial or fulfilling? Are you in a rut and in need of change? If you could accomplish one thing this year, what would it be?
I find questions a great way of finding answers. As I ponder questions like the ones above (and you can choose your own), it opens my thoughts and my imagination to what is possible.
Have you ever heard of the Japanese principle of Kai-Zen? It is the principle of “constant and never-ending improvement”. When applying the philosophy of Kai-Zen, one tries to improve by just 1% each day. It is the small, incremental changes that lead to the big changes and results. While the principle of Kai-Zen may not be appropriate for every situation in life, I feel it is a great approach to take if you are looking for an effective, long-term strategy for building good health. It is not important that you be perfect. Instead, what small step can you take today to further your goal of getting healthier? It may be something as simple as drinking unsweet tea instead of sweet tea or taking a walk around the block.
The principle of Kai-Zen is especially powerful when it comes to nutrition. The only way to build a strong, resilient nutritional foundation is by doing a little day after day after day. It is not the supplement you take today that will help you stay healthy today. It is the supplement you have taken everyday for the past weeks, months, years that gives you the health you experience today. The principle of Kai-Zen is also at play in sickness and disease. It is not the junk food you eat today alone that makes you sick but it is all the junk food you have eaten over the past weeks, months, years.
Getting regular chiropractic adjustments is another use of the principle of Kai-Zen. The adjustment you get today may relieve the neck pain or back pain you are feeling but it is the regular, consistent adjustments you get month after month that build a stronger, healthier nervous system.
Perhaps the easiest way for you to apply the principle of Kai-Zen is by being a part of my practice community. Make a commitment to getting regular chiropractic check-ups and regular nutritional health checks. Every day I come into my office with the goal of helping my patients get healthy and stay healthy! But I can only help YOU if you are here.
